You heard it here last
Japan had a huge 8.9 earthquake this morning. The article i was reading claimed it was the fifth largest quake in the world in the last hundred years.

Along with concern about the people in japan, there's a somewhat more direct concern about tsunamis for pretty much everyone living along the pacific ocean. I don't remember exactly how fast tsunamis travel but i'm thinking it's probably best to just stay away from the beach all day today.

Bizarrely, I actually had plans to go to the beach today. :P

The tsunami, such that it was, hit the west coast around 8AM today. Mostly it a concern for folks north of us. The evacuated some towns on the Oregon/Washington coast.

Not just up there. I know they closed at least some beaches in SF, and they had helicopters flying around down here telling people to evacuate the beaches. It didn't end up being very big, but better safe than sorry.

Yeah, and the Red Cross has opened a couple of shelters in Pacifica and Half Moon Bay. I think, though mostly they wanted the practice of opening shelters, what with San Bruno and all.

I personally was concerned for the water supply. Treatment facilities tend to be in low-lying areas. It was a good reminder that I should pick up my 3 days supply of water to keep around.
