Another question for y'all
Do any of you have to pay a trash or water bill every month? If so, do you know about how much it averages out to?

I currently have to pay electric ($20-$60, avg of about $30-40 i think) and gas ($15-$45, average of about $25 i think) but not water and trash. A lot of the apartments we're looking at don't include water and/or trash though, so we need to account for that in the total cost of the apartment.

Needless to say information from anyone else living in SoCal would be especially useful, but i'll take whatever i can get. Thanks!

Not much, is my understanding. $10-15 each or so. Then again, this's mostly been out on the East coast, so YMMV.

Our water/sewer/trash bill at the apartment in Upland was $35-40/month.

Not that we're anywhere near you, but our water/sewer is around $40/mo. Trash collection is just rolled into city taxes/services so who knows.

Yup. We're a household of 3. Our water bill is paid every other month and is about $40-$45. We don't have any large water needs (no pool, not much gardening. I do take baths regularly, although I suspect the washer is more of a factor). Umm waste management... I have those bills somewhere... it's every 3 months, I think, let me dig through and find an old one. About $41, but I'm not positive if that's every 3 months or every other month. We have one trash bin (also one recycling bin and one green waste, but I don't think they charge for those here).

There is an economy of scale with both trash and water. A lot of the charges are going to be the initial set regardless of how much you use. So being 3 people probably helps and probably doesn't cost much more than being 1 person, but we get to split the bills 3 ways.

Oh and just to note, this is in Northern California. But hey, at least it's your state.

I had asked my aunt this question a few weeks ago. For her house in LA, the water is about $50, and it also includes the garbage. They water their garden every day, so it's more water than probably most people use and they also have their own washer.

My electrical is around $40 and my h2o/gas is anywhere from $50- $80 (this includes trash), but I think an old house with an old water heater is going to cost more than an apartment would.

Our water/sewer/garbage has ranged from $60/month to $100/month over the last 12 months. I let the lawn die for the summer of '09 and the total bill was in the $65 range. When I was keeping it alive in 2008 we topped out at $105 for last August.

Sewer is fixed at $28, garbage is fixed at $27, and the rest is water. The first 12 CCFs are pretty cheap, like $1.50 each. Over that it nearly doubles, and then doubles again. It's a bill paid every other month, so I divided in half to give you these numbers.
