My car has started making funny scrapping noises whenever it get up to about 65 mph, or at slightly lower speeds if the car bounces a lot from anything.

Obviously i need to take it into the shop, but i'm not sure when i should do that, especially since my "regular" mechanic is in Costa Mesa/Irvine. Which wouldn't have been quite so inconvenient in a week or two but rather sucks now. If i'm really lucky they'll be open on friday so i don't need to worry about work, presuming that it's okay to keep driving the car at the moment as long as i keep it to low speeds =/ However i suspect that i'm probably going to have to end up taking it in tuesday or wednesday morning and make up the time later.

I had a very similar scenario, and it turned out to be my break pads. Apperently (for Saturn, at least), they want to make sure you come in to get your brake pads replaced before they are completely gone - so they make it such that when it gets to a certain point that they need to be replaced, they'll start sounding really scary, prompting the person to take them in.

Something like that.

All the time? Or just when you braked? I've gotten weird sounds like that when braking before, but not just while driving along.

If it is indeed the brakes, it could be that the pads are worn too thin. If the brakes make sounds while you drive, then it's pretty bad--I've been told that by multiple sources. You should probably get it checked out ASAP as opposed to waiting.
