Okay, WTH?

Every day this week i have woken up without having to hit snooze. In a couple cases i've even woken up 10-15 minutes before my alarm was set to go off. As opposed to almost every other day of the last couple months (at least) where i've hit snooze for an hour. Or two. Or occasionally even three.

As far as i can tell nothing else about this week is particularly unusual, so although it's great it's also somewhat confusing and slightly frustrating. It's like some magical switch got flipped on in my brain and i have no idea how, or how long it will last, or how i could make it happen again in the future =P

Friday fun stuff

Quite an assortment of things. First, an amusing video about flipping gender roles at a gym:

Some of the bits are very stereotyped... okay, they're _all_ stereotyped, but some of them are just regular stereotypes and others are actually interesting commentary.

And speaking of commentary on gender roles, the first episode of "Tropes vs Women in Video Games" is out! #1 is "Damsel in Distress":

Back to the subject of boardgames, here's a Cracked article (via +Rachel Schwartz) comparing the "traditional" crappy boardgames a lot of us grew up with to boardgames that are actually fun:

Here are a bunch of "barcodes" made by compressing the frames from various movies. The io9 article has about a dozen of them, but the original source has... way too many to count.

Original source:

if you're fairly familiar with the movie in question you can sometimes identify particular blocks of color. I'm not sure why there's so much black in so many of them though, except for movies set in space i don't generally think of them having that much black. Movies are notorious for making night scenes much brighter than they should be, and there's often "fade to black" cuts, but the actual black part doesn't last _that_ long does it? Maybe i'll have to pick one of the barcodes that seems like it has an unexpected amount of black and rewatch the movie in an analytical way.

And here are a couple links that i thought were kinda interesting, but not interesting enough to bother spending time describing :)
