OmgPonies!

Friday Fun Stuff

It hasn't been a great week for fun stuff, but here's a few things.

First, it's the usual geeky parody of a bad song. This time it's "We're NASA and We Know It (Mars Curiosity)", a parody of that LMFAO song, "Sexy And I Know It". It is a cute parody (it's about NASA and space after all =) but honestly if i was going to be forced to listen to one of the two, i think "Call Me Maybe" is a better song, especially musically. You can certainly make parodies of bad songs as well as "good" ones, but probably the best parodies are the ones where the tune is catchy but the lyrics aren't so great, and i'm not too fond of the "Sexy And I Know It" tune.

But anyways, in addition to music, it seems that once upon a time there was something on Escapist called "Doraleous and Associates." It's a D&D parody that kind of reminds me of Aqua Teen Hunger Force (but maybe that's just because they've got a guy who sounds exactly like Meatwad.) I never really got into Aqua Teen Hunger Force for some reason, but the D&D/generic fantasy setting seems a little more appealing.

So Escapist let the show wither on the vine, and now the creators are re-releasing it on YouTube, apparently hoping to drum up support for a Kickstarter or something to fund more episodes.

So here's the first re-released episode:

Finally, someone did a reasonably impressive mash-up movie of Legend of Zelda and the western genre. It's a three part series, totaling about 20 minutes. First part is here:

Pixar Movie Ranking

Because it's the popular thing to do right now, here's my ranking of Pixar movies.

--- Great ---
1: The Incredibles
2: Up
3: Monsters, Inc.
4: Wall-E
--- Good ---
5: Toy Story
6: Toy Story 2
7: Toy Story 3
8: Ratatouille
--- Okay ---
9: Brave
10: Finding Nemo
11: A Bug’s Life
--- Meh ---
12: Cars*
-- WTF Pixar? ---
13: Cars 2*

Okay, i haven't seen Cars or Cars 2. However the concept behind Cars didn't thrill me since i really have no interest in cars (okay, except for cars like this one :) and it sounded like the plot was rather derivative, so i gave it a pass. So i had even less interest in Cars 2, especially after seeing the reviews.

One of the prime factors in sorting this list was how much would i want to rewatch the movie again? And how would i feel about popping the DVD in and watching it again right now?

Brave and Finding Nemo are kind of indistinct at this point. I haven't chosen to view Finding Nemo more than once or twice, and obviously haven't been able to view Brave more than once yet. They could in theory go up when/if i get to rewatch them.

So how does everyone else order them? I was trying to think of how to do a poll asking the question, but i couldn't come up with a good system. I know! How about a poll about polls?

Poll #1862220 Redundant Poll of Redundancy

What's the _best_ way to do a poll about ranking X items, where X is around a dozen?

X Text Entry questions, so you can just type in the answer for each position
1(20.0%)
X Drop down box questions, each of which has all X options listed.
1(20.0%)
Less than X Text Entry questions, all that matters is the top couple choices and maybe the bottom couple choices
0(0.0%)
Less than X Drop down box questions, all that matters is the top couple choices and maybe the bottom couple choices
0(0.0%)
Don't bother with a poll, just tell people to put their own list in the comments
1(20.0%)
I have a better idea! Which i will explain below!
2(40.0%)

What are the _acceptable_ ways to do the above?

X Text Entry questions, so you can just type in the answer for each position
3(21.4%)
X Drop down box questions, each of which has all X options listed.
3(21.4%)
Less than X Text Entry questions, all that matters is the top couple choices and maybe the bottom couple choices
2(14.3%)
Less than X Drop down box questions, all that matters is the top couple choices and maybe the bottom couple choices
1(7.1%)
Don't bother with a poll, just tell people to put their own list in the comments
3(21.4%)
One of the better ideas that was explained below!
2(14.3%)

This is so you can explain your cool idea that's better than my ideas without having to leave a comment if you want. (Also a demo of text entry questions.)

This is a drop down box, just for the sake of demoing it

Drop
0(0.0%)
Down
0(0.0%)
Box
1(25.0%)
Ticky!
3(75.0%)

(I expect drop down boxes would be a little more work for me, but would actually display the results the best, although i'd probably have to put the polls behind cuts because once you'd answered them they'd probably be veeeeery long. I'll have to take a look at what this poll looks like.)
