It's the last week of a multiweek process. First there's a nomination round that lasts for a couple weeks, in which people nominate videos for a number of different categories. I don't participate in this because i'm not up to date on anything that hasn't appeared at a convention that i've been at.
When that's done the top 20 nominated videos are selected from each category for the semi-finals, in which everyone gets to vote on five videos for each category. There was an extension to the voting for this year so it lasted two weeks. I try to participate in this round every year, but it is kind of a monumental undertaking. 20 videos per category multipled by 24 catgories equals a _lot_ of AMVs, even given the large number of repeats! This year i ended up downloading about 140(?) videos, though i didn't get everything from "First video", "Horror" "Instrumental", or "Multiple Editors". (I got a little short on time near the end of the voting =/)
Now for the Finals we get to pick a single video from the top five videos (unless there was a tie) for each category in the Semi-finals. It's still a lot of videos over all (if i'm counting right, 70 videos spread amongst 126 nominations) but if you like AMVs it would be worth checking out a couple of your favorite categories.
Of course because i participated in the semi-finals i have OPINIONs about what the Finalists _ought_ to be, so i'm going to share :)
This is long! Really really long!
In the below list, [1] indicates that the video is one of the (usually) five finalists. [2] indicates that i voted for it in that category in the semi-finals. [3] indicates that i wanted to nominate it, but it got edged out by videos that were (IMHO) just slightly better. [4] indicates a VCA nominated video that i didn't really think was worth nominating for that category, but which i still enjoyed.
So if something has a [1] but nothing else or a [2] but no [1], well, take that as me having an OPINION about the subject ;)
(Oh, and the links are to the AMV.org pages, which i assume still require you to have an account to access. But if you care enough about AMVs to be interested in this then why wouldn't you have a free AMV.org account?)
