Mordor is erupting!

They expected Mount Doom's stunt double to erupt, but instead one of its neighbors did.

So let's get this straight, the Tongariro National Park in New Zealand's North Island, which was used as the filming location for Mordor in the LotR movies, contains three major volcanoes, Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro.

During filming they used Ngauruhoe for long shots of Mount Doom, so that's the one that looks like what you expect it to look like from the film. But when they actually filmed the actors climbing up the slopes they used Ruapehu instead for some reason.

So they thought Ruapehu was going to explode, but then Tongariro, which was just part of the background in the films, blew instead.

Tricksy volcanoeses!
