Jack FM just bought my loyalty, or at least put down a good sized down payment on it :) I had the radio on last night while i was in the shower (in the shower and listening to my alarm while trying to wake up being pretty much the only times i listen to broadcast radio) and they played Tom Sawyer!!! Which isn't exactly my favorite Rush song, but it's certainly not my least favorite Rush song either :) (The music is certainly good, but i don't think it's as lyrically strong as a lot of their other songs that i like better.)

I don't know if I ever mentioned the story about how you helped me to confuse/impress one of my friends in Chicago. This was a few years ago, but well after I'd had a chance to demonstrate my near-total ignorance of popular culture to all of my friends there.

A bunch of us were sitting around chatting about who knows what, and my friend Adam made the comment (totally natural in context) "Why does it happen? Because it happens." He might not have even been consciously thinking of Rush when he said it, and usually that sort of reference would have gone straight over my head. But fortunately I'd had you as a roommate for years, so without missing a beat I was able to reply "Why are we here? Because we're here." I even managed to do it nonchalantly and with a straight face.

Adam recognized the reference at once, of course, but he couldn't bring himself to believe that I had ever heard the song (or certainly not that I was familiar enough with it to make that response). He just sort of stared at me with a weird look for a minute while he tried to figure out whether the two phrases were often mentioned together in philosophy texts or something. At last, he gave a final confused squint in my direction and asked, "Roll the bones?" And when I chuckled in response, he looked at me with new respect. (That went away quickly once I explained that I had only picked up the lyrics secondhand, but it was still pretty fun to upset his expectations even briefly. So thanks!)

Jack, relax, get busy with the facts
Well i'm always glad to help out my geeky friends by imbuing them with my superior knowledge of pop culture and... er, wait, you say i did what now??? :)

I hadn't actually realized i'd infected you that much with the music. Um, sorry, sorta? :)
