My hair does not like going two days with conditioner but no shampoo. Actually it doesn't really like going just one day with conditioner but no shampoo either, though not quite as much. People keep saying that if i keep it up long enough though my hair will eventually stop being so greasy... I'm not entirely sure i believe them :)

http://www.haarkram.e-something.de/start.html That's a pretty good guide to the conditioner only method. I've done it, but I actually switched to using All in One soap on my hair a few times a week because I like the lemon scent of the bar I use and it's one less thing I have to buy.

I have just spent all of my computer time today following links from that site, primarily from the long hair community...

Must. Stop. Reading.

What? I'm confused. As far as I know, conditioner ALWAYS makes hair greasy. Using just conditioner seems like a really bad idea, unless your hair is insanely dry.

Where did you hear this idea from?

It's one of the methods for taking care of super-long hair that doesn't strip the older, drier growth up to and past the waist (at the point where it's been around for years and needs gentler care).

Conditioner does have detergent in it, but just enough to help you rinse it out. You can use a light conditioner and let it soak a long time to let that detergent act as a shampoo substitute. It cuts through dirt and leaves some or most of the oils, which you can then distribute through your hair (so if your hair is too short it remains greasy instead of looking shiny and healthy). It actually does work very well and after a few weeks your scalp adjusts, but you have to stand with slimy hair while it works. A lot of people just oil the bottom length of their hair after shampooing as a compromise (I just keep wondering what happens if their hair oil mix goes rancid!)

I really like the superfatted shampoo bars now as a substitute - less scalp irritation and less hair falling out than regular shampoo, but they're not detergent so they only work in soft water.

Well, I think you're not supposed to wash it every day period, conditioner or not, so if you are that might be the problem.

That said, I've tried several less-shampoo and no-shampoo variants, and I can't seem to make them work either, despite sticking it out for a while. My hair either knots horrifically or is incredibly greasy (and itchy). So yeah, not just you.
