Interesting
If i leave my car parked on the roof on a sunny afternoon by 5:30 the batteries in my mp3 players will be _very_ hot. If i try to start the mp3 players they'll power up, play a couple seconds of audio, and then automatically power down again. If i cool the batteries down (by painfully holding them in my hands until they're not scorchingly hot anymore) the mp3 players work fine. It's possible that there's some other interaction going on, but battery temperature sure seems like the leading culprit.

ooh...I don't think it's good for your mp3 player to get that hot. I don't leave mine in the car during the summer months.

interesting question about the batteries though.

Yeah, you're probably right =P I should remember to stick them in the glove compartment at least, it's a lot cooler in there.

I know shit happens when batteries are too *cold*. We were up in the mountains and it was snowing. We couldn't get into our truck cause the remote/alarm wouldn't work. We were all "GAAAAH!" but a friend said, "Hold the battery in your hand for a while then put it back in the remote". It worked!

Also, using a digital camera in freezing conditions is a great way to drain the rechargeable batteries *really* fast.

As for the mp3 player, I always take mine with me. Partly to avoid letting it get too hot, and partly because it'd be the only thing remotely worth breaking into my car to steal.

Now that makes intuitive sense to me. Energy storage devices cooling off, slowing down, being less effective, until they finally stop working all together.

Seems like if anything batteries ought to be happier when they're warm. Until they get so energetic that they explode that is, and then _they'd_ still be energetic and happy, it's just the owner of whatever they exploded all over that wouldn't be :)
