Further note to self: If you _do_ insisit on packing boxes densly with books, you _can_ get away with carrying one of those boxes along with a box of DVDs at the same time. It evens the weight out nicely.

A long time ago i picked up a steam cleaner with the intent to clean this apartment up a bit, but never actually got around to it. (Okay, technically it's not a steam cleaner, it's a "deep cleaner" or something like that that uses hot soapy water, but close enough.)

Today i figured hey, i've got this steam cleaner lying around, and the new living room is practically empty anyways until i move my stuff in, why not actually get some use out of it? It's rather odd that when you're actually using the steam cleaner you don't really seem to notice anything happening. The carpet doesn't really change color, in fact it's hard to tell it's even gotten wet at all until you step on a spot you cleaned. The first difference i noticed was that _new_ blackish spots started appearing, and it took me a couple seconds to realize they were clumps of hair. It's amazing how much hair gets left behind by the vacuum but the steam cleaner somehow manages to pick up. Well, pick up is a relative term. It doesn't manage to suck them up, but it does pull them out of the carpet and accumulate them in strands and clumps and then pushes them around a bit, so every couple minutes you need to stop to pick up all the tangles of hair that are accumulating on the carpet.

But _other_ than that no really obvious changes, and you might think it was doing nothing at all, right up until you dump out the waste water. Which is a dark brown-grey and filled with all kinds of clumps of disgusting stuff. Wow. Eww. Wow. I'm wondering now if i should take the time to clean the carpet in my bedroom as well before i start moving more stuff in. It doesn't _look_ very dirty, but who knows what the steam cleaner would manage to suck out.

Oh, and i stopped by my storage unit on the way there to take stock of things and was horrified to be reminded of how big of a mess it is. Tons of stuff and all covered with dust and spiderwebs =P I think i need to at least start the same process with that as i'm taking with everything else, a little bit at a time. I grabbed a couple things out this time, mainly my old chair which was sitting right in front and managed to wedge it into my car with all the boxes. The more stuff i can get out of there before the frantic last minute stuffing of a UHaul the happier i will be i think.

Anyways, tired and sore from moving another thirteen boxes of stuff and doing various cleaning things. Need to go to bed and get up early tomorrow. Stupid non-vacation days =P

Ewwww to the clumps of hair. I absolutely hate hair, I don't even know why. My car has a bunch right behind the driver's seat.

Wow the fabled storage unit. You know I've heared story about such a monster but I don't think I"ve ever seen it. Good luck taming it!

Yeah! There's a bicycle in there that you were supposed to take but never got around to! =P

Wow... what a project. Continued luck with the move-in. I recommend steam-cleaning the bedroom!

California generates a lot of crap, without any help from people. I recently cleaned the blades of the fan in our dining room - first time in 2 years. The blades had 1/4 inch clumps of gray "fuzz" (which melts into a nasty gray paste when it gets wet) lining the front edge of each blade, and the rest of each blade was also liberally coated with grime. I see little reason why carpets wouldn't absorb the same filth, especially when you factor in people walking on it.

Let us know when you plan on doing the big U-haul transfer! If it's a weekend/afternoon/evening, Geoff and I would be happy to help (as I've indicated in the past).

Yeah, i expected the carpet to be dirty, what surprised me was the total lack in visible change to the carpet while i was in the process of cleaning it.

I'm currently thinking of saturday the 10th for the U-Hauling. I'd considered doing it sunday the 4th but decided i'd probably want more time than that to get everything sorted out.

How does that sound to you?

I, at least, will be available to help on the 10th. Geoff may be busy with last minute work for school, but if not, he'll also be available.
