National Marriage Equality Day
August 7th has apparently been designated as National Marriage Equality Day as part of the response to the whole Chick-Fil-A controversy which i've only been peripherally aware of.

(For anyone even less initiated than i, Chick-Fil-A president decides to make a big deal out of supporting "traditional marriage", LGBT community decides to boycott (there's only one store in my area, and i've never been there, so... boycott accomplished?) then a bunch of homophobic people did a "support Chick-Fil-A" day which supposedly produced record sales, then LGBT planned a "same-sex couples go and make out in Chick-Fil-A restaurants" day (cute idea, but not really my thing) which i'm not sure if it's actually happened yet or not.)

This however is a more straightforward and easier to participate in response. The plan is to just go someplace that supports LGBT rights and spend some money there to prove that supporting LGBT rights is just as good business as being a jerk. The original plan was to make it a "Starbucks day", but they decided to expand it. Unfortunately the expanded list doesn't really include anywhere convenient to go and spend a couple bucks other than Starbucks, and i agree with the original idea that it's not going to make much of an impression unless it's actually a brick & mortar store.

So now i've got to find a Starbucks i can stop by after work, since there's no longer one located within convenient distance of work itself. I do wonder if this is perhaps being done on a somewhat short notice. After all, i didn't hear about it til this morning, but on the other hand i _did_ hear about it, and i don't even use Facebook :)

As far as I know one of the issues is that C-a-F is a franchise, and they don't let openly gay or lesbian people own restaurants. Just on top of the general supporting bigotry - including lobbying for the US government not to oppose the bill in Uganda that would make homosexuality subject to capital punishment.

And the gay makeout happened, and made the Swedish paper I read! XD
